INFORMAL EDUCATION

Informal education is really life long education. It is a natural and spontaneous education . Informal education is that learning which goes on outside of a formal learning environment. The process of informal education starts from birth and continues until death. Informal education takes place through daily activities and experiences. There are no examinations and awarding of certificates. In this type of education there is no prescribed time table and curriculum It is not confined to any specific agency. The family,  peer group, community etc are important agencies of informal education.

Family is a typical informal agency of education. We call it as informal agency because there is no fixed schedule of teaching, no time table, no formal syllabus and very little formal teaching. Family lays foundation for the physical , mental, moral, emotional, social and spiritual growth of the child. It renders good nourishment and healthy habits. Family also helps to develop desirable interest and attitudes in the child. It caters to the varied needs of the child at various stages of development.

Peer Group forms an important informal and socializing agency with which individual comes into contact during the early childhood, later childhood and adolescence.Much of the Social learning involving the formation of Social interest , Social Customs and traditions, Social Prejudices and the lights are learned during one's association with peer group members. The members of the peer group may be classified as infant peers childhood peers and adolescence peers. The peer groups are the activity groups of young children, which also play the educational role of informal agency in their own way. They are the associations formed spontaneously for the purpose of recreation or play or such other common mutual interests. It helps the child in the development of rational conscience and scale of values. Peer group also help to
equip young people efficiently and effectively for future.

A child grows in the family, school and community. He learns more by living as a member of the community.Mutual co-operation and collaboration between the school and community is desirable for democratization and improvement of education.
The School should be developed as the community centre or "miniature community" by making its programmed relevant to the life needs and aspirations.Community creates proper environment in the school so as to bring about different types of development of the learner-physical,moral,social,cultural,academic etc. Thus it makes the individual a fit person for the society.
